NORFOLK, Neb. -- As the Halloween celebrations are underway across the state, scarecrows have taken over the downtown of Norfolk as residents in the area get to vote on what scarecrow is the best in the River Point.

While scarecrows are seen in cornfields, businesses in downtown Norfolk have taken the challenge to try and win the popular vote of Norfolk citizens.

“We’re all a little competitive. Everybody likes a good challenge,” said Danielle, assistant manager at Juice Stop.

These scarecrows can be seen lining downtown from first street to seventh street and some carry more stories than just decorations.

“Last year we had Finn’s mom and dad here and then, if you scan the QR code, you get the story…it kind of continues from last year,” said Roxi Zimmerman, owner of Roxi’s Elegant Bridal.

“We’re all fruit based so what better way to bring fruit into the competition than with Straw Barry. It’s pretty creative I think,” Danielle said.

At the Ravenwood, something from the author Edgar Allen Poe, can be seen staring at downtown goers as they walk by.

“I’ve had people come in and ask about it," said Scott Adams, Ravenwood owner. "There’s a couple of people that have said, ‘Yeah, I was driving by and I had to stop and see it!' That happens from time to time too."

The contest is in its second year and, with the success from last year’s event, business owners hope the tradition continues.

“I think anything that can bring the community together in a positive and fun way especially when we’re getting closer to Halloween and the holidays," Danielle said.

Through the rest of October, the voting will take place on the River Point District website where the best scarecrow in Norfolk will be crowned.

Last year’s winner was Roxi’s Elegant Bridal as they continued last year’s scarecrow's story into this years.
