NORFOLK, Neb. -- A civic leader and longtime Norfolk businessman announced Wednesday that he is seeking to be elected the city’s next mayor.

Scott Williams, who owns Insurance Associates along with his wife, Lori, said, “Norfolk is my home, and I want nothing more than to see it continue to prosper. As mayor, I’d be committed to doing all I can to ensure that Norfolk remains a great place to live and work.”

Williams, who has not previously served in elective office, is the first announced candidate seeking to succeed Josh Moenning as mayor. Individuals can officially file for office as of Jan. 5.

Moenning will have completed two four-year terms as mayor by the end of 2024.

If elected, Williams said he would focus on four key areas on behalf of citizens

  • Economic development in the industrial, retail and construction areas
  • Efficient spending of tax dollars
  • Public safety
  • Street improvements

“My goal would be to help foster growth while also making sure the city is being fiscally responsible. It doesn’t have to be an either/or situation,” he said.

Williams has been extensively involved in civic leadership positions, both locally and statewide.

He served as chairman of the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors when the business organization was selected as the top chamber in the nation. He also serves on the board of the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, is an officer of First Congregational United Church of Christ and has served on the board s of Norfolk Nook Kiwanis, Norfolk Arts Center and Norfolk Area United Way.

“I’ve always felt that it was my responsibility as a Norfolkan to pitch in and help where I could. When many are contributing in different ways, getting things accomplished is easier,” Williams said.

A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Williams and his wife have been involved in a 50 year old family business for the past 42 years. Insurance Associates, located at 1900 W. Pasewalk Ave., serves as a full-service, independent insurance agency with a staff of 10 producers and account managers.

The Williamses have been married for 42 years and have four grown children and nine grandchildren.

“If I’m fortunate enough to be elected mayor, it will be a way for me to continue to give back to Norfolk and its citizens,” Williams said. “Service to others is what public service is all about.”

Williams said he looks forward to having the opportunity to share his views on the city and its future with Norfolk residents. “I’m always open to a good conversation.”
