STANTON, Neb. -- A man is alive, but seriously injured after his car was launched into the air.

In a press release from the Stanton County Sheriff's Office, authorities said they were notified about a single-vehicle car accident on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 5:15 p.m.

According to the release, the accident happened four miles east of the junction of Highway 32 and Highway 81 when a vehicle traveling at high speeds left the roadway and crossed into a north ditch.

The car struck an embankment, became airborne, struck several trees, and then came to rest on a final tree.

Other people passing by in the area noticed the crash and stopped to help the driver, a 26-year-old Council Bluffs man, from the wreckage.

The driver was taken to a local hospital by Madison Fire and Rescue with serious injuries before he was transported to another Omaha hospital.

The Sheriff's Office said the driver's seatbelt was in use and airbags were deployed, which they credit for saving the driver's life.

The vehicle was destroyed in the crash and required a "wrecker" for the car to be removed from being wedged against the trees.
