NORFOLK, Neb. -- With Valentine’s Day finally arriving, flower shops all over Nebraska are looking as busy as the trade floor in New York City. 

“It's our Black Friday,” said Jessica Messenger, owner of Floral Expressions. “It's our busiest day of the year, we have tons of preorders. We'll get tons of orders the day of and we'll have people coming in at five o'clock tomorrow night asking if we have flowers left over.”  

Floral Expressions has prepared for the holiday and even the day after. 

“You always get those last minute people who are like ‘oh my gosh, I forgot that it was Valentine's day’ we'll even get orders on the 15th for people that forgot it was Valentine's Day,” Messenger said.

Messenger said the flower that everyone loves the most is roses.

“You know, everybody thinks that they mean love,” Messenger said. “So they want to go with the meaning behind that.”

With that meaning comes a wave of high demand. 

“So we order probably anywhere from 2,000 to 2,500 stems of roses every Valentine's Day, separated out between, you know, red and the other colors,” Messenger said. “By the end of the week, they will be gone.”

Even though Valentine's Day is one of the largest rushes of the year for many flower shops, Messenger said that the other 364 days are just about as busy. 

“I mean, we have a pretty steady stream of business you know with big events, you know, babies being born, weddings, funerals, but Valentine's Day definitely has a big bump in business for us,” Messenger said.
