A procession escorted by Norfolk Police was held for an off-duty deputy who passed away last week in a tragic accident

NORFOLK, Neb. -- A procession escorted by Norfolk Police was held for an off-duty deputy who passed away last week in a tragic accident.

Nickolas Koeppe, 34, was driving an excavator when he ended up in shallow water. Koeppe was attempting to cross a bridge when the bridge gave out and submerged the excavator in water.

After CPR was administered, they were able to re-establish a heartbeat. he was taken to a Des Moines hospital where he later died.

Norfolk Police escorted Koeppe to Stonacek funeral home.

Koeppe had been a deputy in Peru, IA for 18 months before he passed. He was a native of Hadar. 

Koeppe is survived by his parents and children.
