NORFOLK - Just six hours into the new year, a home suffered severe damage after catching fire.

The Norfolk Fire Department says they were called to a home at 1306 S. Second Street just after 6 a.m.

Heavy smoke and fire could be seen coming from the one-story house. Firefighters from Norfolk, Hadar, and Battle Creek brought the fire under control after about 20 minutes.

Fire Captain Scott Bonsall said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature.

There were people in the home at the time, but Bonsall said they were able to get out safely. A pet was lost.

Fire officials estimate around $50,000 worth of damage was done.
