St. Paul’s Lutheran school student pens his way to national handwriting title
A masterstroke of penmanship: Pierce White wins prestigious Zaner-Bloser national championship handwriting award
NORFOLK, Neb. -- In a triumph of penmanship and precision, Pierce White, a kindergartner at St. Paul’s Lutheran School, has been crowned the grand champion of the 34th annual Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest. The announcement came on May 14, marking a proud moment for the young student and his community.
Pierce’s winning submission stood out among a staggering 80,000 entries from across the nation. The Zaner-Bloser contest, renowned as the most prestigious of its kind, evaluates students' handwriting based on four key legibility elements: size, shape, spacing, and slants. After a rigorous selection process, the field of 80,000 was narrowed down to just seven finalists, each representing a different grade level.
While the victory was met with excitement and admiration from the audience, Pierce himself seemed unfazed by the magnitude of his achievement. "I won the handwriting contest and everyone was like, did he win the handwriting contest," Pierce said with a shrug. "I just like to write books and I like to draw dinosaurs too."
To anyone else, winning a national handwriting contest would be a monumental accomplishment. But for the down-to-earth kindergartner, it's simply another day doing what he loves.
Behind Pierce's seemingly effortless skill lies a dedication to perfection, according to his mother and teacher. They describe him as a young perfectionist.
Zaner-Bloser Nebraska Representative Chuck Barnhart hopes that his achievement will serve as an inspiration for other young students. "We hope this achievement is an opportunity to motivate the youth and understand what else students can continue to strive for," Barnhart stated. "That they will be the best they can be in life, and their hard work will be rewarded like Pierce White. So keep at it, persevere, and be the best person you can be."
In recognition of his talent, Pierce was awarded a trophy, a $500 cash prize, a medallion, and a congratulatory letter from Republican Congressman Mike Flood.
