OMAHA, Neb. -- Two men from Omaha have been sentenced to federal prison for their involvement in a bank fraud conspiracy that swindled over $180,000 from financial institutions.

Calvin Carter, 22, and Malik Washington, 28, received 18-month sentences in federal court yesterday. They were convicted of conspiring to commit bank fraud between April 2021 and December 2022.

According to prosecutors, Carter and Washington recruited individuals to provide their bank account information. The pair then deposited counterfeit checks into those accounts, making the checks appear legitimate. Once the checks cleared, Carter and Washington withdrew the money.

Authorities say the scheme resulted in losses totaling $180,315.54. In addition to their prison sentences, both men were ordered to pay full restitution.
