BATTLE CREEK, Neb. - A Saturday morning fire caused a roof to collapse and inflicted significant damage to a home in Northeast Nebraska.

The fire started around 8 a.m. off of Highway 121 on the north edge of Battle Creek. Two people were inside at the time and escaped safely, according to Battle Creek assistant chief Mike Goodwater.

There were no hydrants in the area, forcing fire crews to bring in water tankers. As the blaze continued, Goodwater said the firefighters took a defensive stance. Crews tore down walls of the house in order to better fight the blaze.

Battle Creek Assistant Fire Chief Mike Goodwater says the flames coming from the garage made it dangerous on his firefighters. He said there was a lot of fuel for the fire.

Fire officials are still investigating what caused the fire. Crews from Battle Creek, Norfolk and Meadow Grove responded to the scene.
