Holiday season kicks off in Wayne, encouraging local shopping

WAYNE, Neb.-- The holiday season is now in full swing in a small Northeast Nebraska town after the annual Christmas in Wayne parade.
Since the early 2000's this parade has been a staple in Wayne to kick off the holiday season.
With Santa at the lead and utility vehicles decked out in lights the parade brings everyone downtown to enjoy the night.
While many events follow throughout the season, according to the Director of Economic Development Luke Virgil, the main reason "Christmas in Wayne" continues is the urge to have people shop local.
"We absolutely use this as the kickoff for our holiday shopping season," Virgil said. "Shop local's a big deal in a small community, and we try and lean into that. We've got deals and retail specials that kick off tonight. Our organization helps put together a punch card that encourages shopping local."
Wayne has holiday punch cards that are available at local stores to encourage the small town feel.
When the card is filled out, residents are entered into a giveaway for chamber bucks to go right back into the community.
The event also opened the festival of trees happening at the Wayne Auditorium.
