COLUMBUS, Neb. — An interim head coach will be leading the Columbus girls basketball team for the remainder of the season.

A spokesperson for Columbus Public Schools confirmed to NCN that Andrew Johnson has resigned as head coach. He was in his first season leading the Discoverers. Johnson is not a teacher at CPS.

“We wish him and his family the best as he pursues other opportunities,” the school said in a statement.

Conner Lowery is serving as interim coach for the rest of the season. She has worked as an assistant coach for multiple years.

The school district says Johnson resigned on Jan. 28, the day after a loss to Norfolk in the opening round of the Heartland Athletic Conference tournament. The spokesperson did not give a reason for the resignation and Johnson didn’t respond to an email requesting comment.

Under Lowery, the Discoverers have beaten Fremont and lost at #2 Omaha North. The team has a 5-11 record with seven regular season games remaining.
