LINCOLN – An 88-year-old Avoca woman will killed in pedestrian crash in Lincoln on Wednesday.

Lincoln police report that Joan Meyer died of injuries sustained when she was hit by a pickup while crossing a street in Lincoln on Jan. 31.

Police say 47-year-old Michael Hughes of Denton was driving a 2010 Chevy Silverado pickup south on 14th Street and stopped at a stop sign just before the 14th and G streets intersection.

He attempted to turn left onto G Street and struck Meyer who was crossing the road in the crosswalk, police said.

Officers nearby responded immediately and rendered first aid on scene. Meyer was then taken to the hospital for a serious head injury.

Her injuries were initially thought to be non-life-threatening, and the crash is now being investigated as a motor vehicle homicide, officers said.

Hughes was initially cited and released for failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian, but police expect a motor vehicle homicide investigation now that Meyer has died.
