GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Grand Island Senior High has named a new head coach for its volleyball program.

School officials announced Tuesday that Jadeyn VanDerwerken will take over the Islanders program for the 2026–27 season.

She replaces Braeden Mlinar, who will be taking the head coaching job at Lincoln Southeast. Notably, VanDerwerken most recently served as an assistant varsity and JV head coach also at Lincoln Southeast.

VanDerwerken says she’s excited to return to the Grand Island community and lead the program.

“I’m incredibly excited and honored to take over the volleyball program at Grand Island Senior High. Volleyball has given me so much throughout my life, and I’m passionate about sharing that knowledge and love for the game with the young athletes in this community. My goal is to help our players fall in love with the sport while also learning how to compete at a high level,” VanDerwerken said.

Grand Island Activities Director Chris Ladwig says VanDerwerken brings a strong vision for the program moving forward.

“I am very excited to welcome Coach VanDerwerken and her family back to Grand Island. She brings a definitive vision for excellence both on and off the court, along with a commitment to the Islander Way. Coach V is committed to continuing to build our program, along with connecting to our youth. I look forward to working with Coach V and her staff to continue to build on the success of our program,” Ladwig said.

VanDerwerken is expected to step into the role early this summer ahead of the 2026–27 school year.
