MADISON -- The Madison County Courthouse is often a site where negative things might happen, but Friday it was the joyous site of graduation.

The Northeast Nebraska Drug Court graduated two participants of its rehabilitation program, dismissing their charges of methamphetamine possession.

"It's been a really great experience, it taught me how to live," said Ashley Jessen. She completed the program Friday after about a year of dedication.

Twenty participants of the program are assigned a sponsor, go through rehabilitation steps, and check-in with a judge every Friday.

Coordinator Matthew McManigal said the program aims to stop recidivism permanently -- a proactive solution.

"It utilizes a team approach, from the justice to the law enforcement to health professionals [...] that reinforcement is huge to implement change. We're all very passionate about it," he said.
