NDCS inmate from Columbus dies Sunday

A 70-year-old inmate from northeast Nebraska has died in custody.

OMAHA, Neb. -- A 70-year-old inmate from northeast Nebraska has died in custody.

Richard Baney, of Columbus, had been incarcerated at the Community Corrections Center - Omaha.

Baney’s sentence started on October 1, 2021. He was sentenced to one year and nine months on charges out of Madison County that included a second offense of driving under the influence and driving under a revoked license.

He died Sunday in an Omaha hospital.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. As is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
