One dead after Madison County car accident

A northeast Nebraska man is dead after a car accident over the weekend.

MADISON COUNTY, Neb. -- A northeast Nebraska man is dead after a car accident over the weekend. 

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said the one vehicle rollover accident happened Sunday night, around 8:30, south of Battle Creek. 

Authorities said a car ran off the road, causing it to roll. 

The driver, 37-year-old Shane Melcher, of Meadow Grove, was declared dead at the scene. 

A passenger, 37-year-old Macaela Henkel, also of Meadow Grove, was flown from the scene by medical helicopter for her injuries. 

The Sheriff's Office says seatbelts were not in use and alcohol may have been a contributing factor. 

Responding units were Madison County Sheriff's Office, Battle Creek Police Department, and Battle Creek Fire and Rescue. 

The exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
