Winter fire hazard prevention tips
There are many different ways to identify fire hazards and keep your home safe this winter season.
PIERCE, Neb. -- The Winter season is highlighted by chilling temperatures and a yearning to stay warm.
The first thing on our minds usually isn't fire hazards and their potentially destructive force.
But wouldn't you know it, there might be some hazards right in your own home.
"I think the biggest thing would be space heaters. Make sure your space heaters are directly plugged into an outlet. Don't use extension cords and don't use surge protectors," said Kelli Sindt, a firefighter for Pierce Fire and Rescue. "Make sure you don't have any curtains, toys, stuffed animals, blankets within three or four feet of that space heater."
Sindt added that you should also never leave a space heater unoccupied or running when you leave the room.
For people who use a fireplace, there are a few things to do before you light it or clean it out.
"Fireplaces need to have a screen around them to stop any embers from coming out," Sindt said. "When you clean a fireplace out, make sure to take the ashes out and put them in a metal container. Store them outside, away from any structures."
It is also recommended that you have your chimney cleaned out each year.
