NPD releases more details on Saturday shooting incident, library arrest

Authorities have released additional information about a Saturday shooting and arrest in Norfolk.

NORFOLK, Neb. -- Authorities have released additional information about a Saturday shooting and arrest in Norfolk.

At 7:38 a.m., Norfolk Police received a 911 call regarding a shooting that had occurred inside a residence in the 1000 block of W. Phillip Avenue.

A woman who was living at the residence told officers that a 42-year-old homeless woman had been staying at the residence and had been acting erratically and exhibiting paranoid behavior overnight.

The caller then sought assistance in dealing with the woman, at which time the suspect became confrontational, NPD said. The suspect then reportedly pulled out a handgun and began firing toward the caller

The caller then tried to flee the home, with the suspect in pursuit, NPD said.

The caller made it to a neighboring residence was able to contact 911, Norfolk Police Capt. Michael Bauer said. She had not been hit by any of the bullets, nor had anyone else.

Officers then followed leads toward the suspect's location, finding her at the Norfolk Public Library.

The suspect, 42-year-old Maxine S. Keys, was arrested for first-degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

A 9 mm handgun was recovered at the time of arrest, Bauer said.

Assisting with the investigation and apprehension were the Stanton and Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol. 

The suspect was was held in the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail.
