POLK COUNTY, Neb. -- An east-central Nebraska community got a reminder of how dangerous downed power lines can be this week.

The Polk County Rural Public Power District shared a photo on Facebook showing the damage it observed from a power line that was still energized after coming down.

Officials with PCRPPD said it received a call Friday that there was a line down, and when a lineman arrived, they found damage to the surrounding ground.

PCRPPD said electricity was able to move through the ground thanks to the perfect mixture of soil conditions.

Power district officials said they want to remind everyone to always assume downed power lines are still energized, stay away from the lines, and call for help immediately.
