LINCOLN — A Greeley County Board member has been fined $1,500 by a state political accountability board in connection with contracts he had with the county to do flood-related road repairs.

Joe Leslie, who has a road grading business, became engaged in repairing roads in the central Nebraska county following the statewide flooding in 2019, according to a news release from the Nebraska Political Accountability and Disclosure Commission.

But a fellow county commissioner complained that Leslie had a prohibited interest in a contract with the county, and had, on one occasion, voted on a contract that involved his work.

The commission, meeting Friday, approved two fines of $750 each after holding a hearing on the matter in November.

One fine was for voting on a contract that involved his financial interest. The other was for violating a state law that prohibits a member of a county board from having an interest in a contract with that county, unless that conflict is recognized in a public motion by the board.

When reached by phone on Friday, Leslie, who lives in Spalding, declined to comment.
