SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb.-- A northeast Nebraska school held a ribbon cutting Thursday for a brand new complex for kids.

In front of the entire student body, Covington Elementary School in South Sioux City unveiled a newly built playground in the back of the school for all the kids to enjoy.

The complex includes slides, monkey bars, and a swing set as well.

The superintendent for South Sioux City Community Schools, Todd Strom, talked about the addition of the complex.

“We had the opportunity this year to do quite a bit of work on this particular playground,” said Strom. “We do work on all of our district playgrounds. This one though, we put all new equipment, new surfacing, and so it’s just a better playing area and more enjoyable.

He also said that the new complex was much needed.

“It’s a huge improvement for what they had before,” he added. “Especially when it gets to some days when moisture is an issue and it’s rainy or possible snow. Now we’ll have the opportunity to have outside recess most every day.”

With all of the kids checking out the new playground, Strom also decided to give it a try as well.

“I’m just fortunate I didn’t get wedged in that thing,” he said. “I haven’t been down one of those things for a while.”

Thursday also marked the first day of school for kids from K-6th & 9th Grade. The students were also rewarded a half day after the ribbon cutting.
