Wayne, Neb. --- The University of Mary would use a 21-point fourth quarter to pull away from Wayne State 56-49 inside of Rice Auditorium Saturday evening. Wayne State falls to 9-7 with the loss (5-7 NSIC). UMary with the win moves to 9-6 on the year with an 8-4 record in the NSIC.

The University of Mary would get out to a quick start on the Wildcats going up 7-2 with 6:55 left in the first quarter before a layup from Rachel Dahlen and a three pointer from Lauren Zacharias would tie the game up at 7-7. UMary would take a 9-7 lead over WSC heading into the first media timeout with 4:53 left in the quarter. A three-pointer from Logan Hughes would give the ‘Cats their first lead of the day at 10-9. The Marauders would go on to lead at the end of the first 11-10.

UMary would open up the second quarter on a 5-0 run on the Wildcats before Kylah vanDonkersgoed would end the run to get the game back to within four at 16-12 with 7:37 to go in the quarter. The Marauders would get the lead up to eight before the Wildcats cut it back to five at 20-15 heading into the media timeout with 4:27 left in the quarter. Wayne State would only score two free throws coming out of the media timeout as the Marauders would lead going into halftime 24-18.

Wayne State would come out strong to open up the third quarter pulling within one at 26-25 after a 9-0 run highlighted by four points from Hughes and a three-pointer from Kassidy Pingel. The score would remain the same heading into the media timeout at 6:27 remaining in the third quarter. UMary would get the lead back up to six after the media timeout before a Maya Fitzpatrick three-pointer would get the Wildcats back within three at 31-28 with 3:21 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats would tie the game up at 32-32 with 1:58 remaining in the third and take the lead at 34-32 before a last second three-pointer from the Marauders would give them the 35-34 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

A 10-1 Marauders run would open up the fourth quarter would give UMary a ten-point advantage over the Wildcats at 45-35 with 7:13 remaining in the game. The Wildcats would try to get back into the game getting the lead down to seven three times but UMary would continue to hit shots shooting 58.3% in the fourth quarter (7-12) to go on and win the game 56-49.

Hughes was the leading scorer for the ‘Cats with 11 points. She also added four rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals in the loss. Pingel would follow Hughes with nine points, four rebounds and three blocks. Fitzpatrick would have her season high six steals for the Wildcats in the loss.

Wayne State would shoot a season low in the loss (18-65, 27.7%) while the Marauders would shoot 39.6% (21-53) in the win. Wayne State would force 33 turnovers in the loss while UMary forced 22. UMary edged WSC in the rebounding battle 46-37.

The Wildcats will be at home again next weekend hosting Bemidji State Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
