Regulations now in place for 'Shouses' in Madison County

MADISON, Neb. -- Homeowners looking to get creative with their living spaces now have more options in Madison County.
Tuesday saw the Madison County Commissioners pass zoning regulations for "Shouses" in Madison County, and what the required characteristics of the structure were.
A Shouse is a living space built like a shed, in simple terms a shed combined with a house. A number of examples were given during Tuesday's meeting of what Shouse might look like including a renovated grain bin, storage containers, and of course sheds.
The county said the regulations are being put in place because a resident wished to have a lofted living space in their garage. However, no such regulations were in place, the guidelines passed Tuesday have changed that.
Troy Uhlir, the Madison County Commissioner chairman, said Shouses are a new concept, but should provide new opportunities for home builders in the county.
"I think this shows we're open to some change, and making things more accessible for people," Uhlir said.
The regulations went into effect after commissioners unanimously approved the motion.
