NORFOLK, Neb. — A memorial event in memory of a 7-year-old killed while on his scooter aimed to raise awareness for biking safety.

The Landon Bos Memorial Bicycle Rodeo offered various activities with an emphasis on safety while biking for kids.

"Just want to promote safety with kids and emphasize helmet use, rules of the road, and all-around safety for pedestrians and bicyclists," said Dave Bos, Landon’s father.

Local police officers and first responders helped guide students through a safety course, teaching them various rules such as stopping at stop signs and obstacles to look for.

From where it started 17 years ago to where it is today, Dave says he can’t believe the growth of the event.

"From when it first started to where we were chalking it out to having this paved course, bathrooms, playgrounds, and stop signs, it’s come a long way," Bos said.

The event is in memory of Landon Bos, Dave’s son, who was struck and killed by a vehicle while on his scooter in 2007.

Bos has seen an impact in the community from kids who have undergone the course.

"Since we’ve started this event, I can tell you that I’ve seen kids that have come through the course that I’ve seen out on the streets in Norfolk wear their helmets," Bos said. "That’s what it’s all about."

Other activities throughout the day included helmet fitting, child car seat safety checks, and a LifeNet helicopter overview.
