STANTON, Neb. -- The Stanton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of a human skull found in Union Creek.

On Sunday afternoon, a Stanton man searching for a fishing spot reported the find to the sheriff’s office, according to Sheriff Mike Unger.

The skull will be examined by a forensic anthropologist as part of the ongoing investigation. This discovery marks the fifth instance of human remains being found in Stanton County over the past five years.

The previous case followed the 2019 flooding that severely impacted the county’s waterways and roadways.

The sheriff’s office indicated that the skull appears to have been in the creek bank for an extended period.
