NORFOLK, Neb. — Norfolk Police are advising people to take precautions to protect themselves from intruders trying to break into their homes.
“I grew up in a little town and never locked my doors on my car or my house," Bauer said. "Now, I promote that you always keep your doors locked on both your vehicles and your home.”
Advancements in technology has allowed people to see who’s at their door via door bell or video cameras.
Bauer said to make sure windows are also locked especially during warm months.
If someone is actively getting their house broken into, Bauer advises to use caution when trying to protect the property.
“When this is actual criminal activity and someone is trying to forcibly get into your house, you do have the right to defend yourself," Bauer said.
Nebraska follows the Castle Doctrine, which allows somebody to protect their home or dwelling.
Legislators have debated changing the language of the existing law to make Nebraska a “Stand Your Ground” state.
38 states currently have case law or written laws that support the Stand Your Ground rights.
Bauer said the best thing to do when faced with a break-in is to contact authorities.
“The first line of defense is absolutely your cell phone," Bauer said. "Call 911, get our officers in route, and try to allow us to handle it in a manner that is safe for everyone.”
Bauer said it’s important to know the situation and be diligent when protecting a person's home.
