CLEARWATER, Neb. -- Clearwater is hosting a Veterans Park fundraiser at the Clearwater American Legion on Oct. 12.

Kate Ahlers said that the event started because of a Vietnam veteran who lives in Clearwater.

This veteran is battling some health issues and Ahlers said that he met with Michelle Stearns and her husband. During that meeting, he said that it would be nice to have a Veterans Park in Clearwater.

"Her husband said, 'Well, let's put one there,' and that's how we got it going," Ahlers said.

Ahlers said the first step to getting the park was removing the tree and leveling out the land. She also said that there was a mural put up as a part of the first step.

Stearns said the next step was for the concrete to be poured, and Ahlers added that the Chamber had given a generous donation that helped get the concrete poured and a good start on the project.

Stearns said that phase one of the project is done, and statues have been delivered.

"We're here to recognize the veterans in the Clearwater community," Ahlers said.

"We were excited to get this project started and with the help of some veterans and our community and the Chamber, we were able to kick start it," Stearns said.

"The community's just been totally, totally supportive of this whole event," Ahlers said.

There will be a social hour with American Legion Riders, food, a program recognizing 50-year members with guest speakers, and music.

While the project has started, there is still much to do and earn money for.

The fundraising event will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

If anyone would like to donate, they can contact the Corner Stone Bank in Clearwater, or contact Kate Ahlers or Michelle Stearns.
