Johnny Carson statue another opportunity to bring him home
NORFOLK, Neb. -- Norfolk has just revealed its new Johnny Carson statue that now sits right on the corner of Riverpoint Square.
According to the artists, Sherri Treeby and Lee Leuning, the statue portrays Carson in his professional attire, standing in a very specific stance that best represents his intelligence and his whit.
"Growing up I would say Johnny Carson was my favorite show," Treeby said. "I watched him every night on the Tonight Show, and I loved his humor."
"The gesture is when he's looking over at Ed like 'what,' he's a great man with a zinger," Leuning said.
Leuning said they chose a smirk instead of a smile because a smile can look like rows of corn when done in copper, and a smirk was more Carson's style.
"The smirk says it more when you're being satirical which he was," Leuning said.
The statue took almost a year to make. It now sits in downtown Norfolk for the public to see.
Executive Director of Visit Norfolk Traci Jeffrey said the statue will pose as an opportunity to bring Carson home.
"We get visitors from all over the United States that want to come and see where Johnny Carson was raised," Jeffrey said. "This is a great opportunity for people to stand by Johnny Carson, take a selfie, take a picture with him in memory of him."
The statue sits right along the Johnny Carson mural at Riverpoint Square in downtown Norfolk.
