Wisner Neb. -- News Channel Nebraska sits down with Veretta Koehler, a 105-year-old resident of Wisner, who recently celebrated her remarkable life, which began on October 5, 1920.

Koehler's vivid memories paint a picture of a world transformed over a century. She fondly recalls early experiences like riding in her father's Ford Model T, a vehicle that lacked windows but required a hand crank to start.

Her upbringing on a farm instilled values of self-sufficiency, where her family raised livestock and grew their own food, using innovative methods like a deep underground cave to preserve goods without modern refrigeration.

Koehler witnessed significant changes, including the introduction of electricity, which was absent from rural areas during her early years. Her teaching career in the 1930s highlighted the simplicity of the times, with a shared well for water and individual glasses for each student.

After teaching for five years, she married in 1943, raised two sons, and continues to live independently, supported by her nurse, family, and friends. Koehler attributes her longevity to staying active, including climbing the stairs in her two-story home, a practice encouraged by her doctor.
