Gov. Pillen launches Good Life, Great Careers initiative to boost Nebraska workforce

Norfolk Neb. -- In a move aimed at strengthening Nebraska's workforce, Governor Pillen recently unveiled the "Good Life, Great Careers Initiative" during a visit to Northeast Community College. The executive order seeks to create clear pathways for Nebraskans to access stable careers through enhanced apprenticeship programs.

Pillen emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "The Nebraska Department of Labor will prepare and submit to the United States Department of Labor an application for recognizing state Nebraska as a state apprenticeship agency.”

He also highlighted a collaborative effort between the Department of Labor, the Manufacturing Advisory Council, and educational institutions to provide students with an earn-while-you-learn approach to gain skills for high-demand careers.

The initiative will focus on expanding registered apprenticeship programs, particularly in manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, construction, the bio economy, and agriculture.

The goal is to add 6,000 new registered active apprentices in Nebraska, streamlining efforts through the Department of Labor. To support this, Nebraska's manufacturers and community colleges are collaborating on an industry apprenticeship program, backed by a multi-million dollar notice of intent from the Nebraska Department of Labor, Commissioner Katie Thurber said the investment could reach up to $7,000,000, benefiting community colleges statewide.

Furthermore, the initiative aims to incentivize Nebraska students to pursue higher education within the state.

Pillen noted efforts to retain high-achieving students by offering full room and board, tuition, and a $7,500 stipend to students with perfect SAT scores. As part of the plan, the department will assess existing workforce programs to refine strategies, support economic growth, and ensure Nebraskans can thrive in their home state.
