Winter storm watch issued as snow and high winds approach

NORFOLK, Neb. -- The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for eastern Nebraska, predicting hazardous driving conditions due to snow and strong northwest winds. Gusts up to 45 mph are expected, which could create whiteout conditions and significantly reduce visibility.

The region is bracing for 4 to 6 inches of snow from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening (Nov. 29). The most challenging conditions are anticipated Friday evening into Saturday, prompting the weather service to consider upgrading the watch to a Winter Storm Warning or expanding the watch area.

Local officials are urging residents to take precautions. "We've been pretty fortunate in Stanton," said Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger. "If you don't have to go somewhere, then you should probably stay home, and if you do need to go out, just take extra time and slow down." Unger noted a few vehicle incidents, including a non-injury accident south of Pilger, as reminders of the dangers of winter driving.

In Wayne, a snow emergency will be in effect from midnight tonight (Friday, November 28th) until Noon on Sunday, November 30th. The city expects snow totals to exceed 6 inches, coupled with winds up to 35 mph. During the snow emergency, parking is prohibited on all streets in Wayne to allow snow removal crews to clear the entire width of the city streets. Vehicles left on the street will be towed.
