Investigation complete after student-led protest ends in injury
Police say investigation remained impartial despite public attention
FREMONT, Neb. — Fremont police have concluded their investigation into a student-led protest at Fremont High School that ended in a pedestrian crash last week.
According to the Fremont Police Department, five juveniles and once adult were cited after a student-organized anti-ICE protest ended with one student injured.
Police said citations included a juvenile driver for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, as well as citations related to a pedestrian in the roadway and criminal mischief, among others.
The incident drew significant attention on social media, but Deputy Chief Jennifer Birkhofer said investigators remained focused on conducting an impartial review.
“As the police department, we focus on doing a fair and impartial investigation,” Birkhofer said. “We understand there can be a lot of noise in the community when people are emotionally charged, but that is not what we use in an investigation. We stick to the facts of the investigation itself.”
Police also offered guidance for those planning to participate in future demonstrations.
“It’s extremely important to remember to remain calm and peaceful in these situations,” Birkhofer said.
Authorities confirmed the investigation has concluded. The protester who was struck was transported to a hospital following the incident, but no update on her condition has been released.
