WNCC drops a doubleheader to McCook on Wednesday

It was two totally different baseball games between Western Nebraska Community College and McCook Community College Wednesday at Cleveland Field.

Game one saw a combined 34 runs and 33 hits with three home runs hit by each team as McCook captured the win 20-13, coming back with 15 runs in the final three innings. Catcher Gladysh had a grand slam in the second inning while Austin Cooper was a single shy of hitting for the cycle.

Game two was a different game all together with a more defensive contest with strong pitching on both sides as McCook held on to claim the 6-5 win.

WNCC will now be off until Monday when they start their Arizona Spring Break trip with a game with South Mountain Community College.

The first game saw the Cougars trail 3-0 after one inning and then ignited to lead 10-5 after four innings. The Cougars scored six times in the second and four in the fourth.

The second inning started when Will Harbison led off with a home run. Ren Sato followed with a single followed by Garrison Burns getting hit my a pitch. Austin Cooper then doubled to score Jase Satterfield. WNCC loaded the bases and Gladysh took the second pitch and hammered over the fence for a grand slam and a 6-3 lead.

McCook got two in the third to make it a 6-5 contest, but the Cougars went up 10-5 with four fourth-inning runs that started with an Austin Cooper lead-off home run. Harrison Hart followed with a run-scoring single to make it 8-5 and then Harbison had a run-scoring single to make it 9-5. Hart came in on a ground out for the 10th run.

McCook answered in the fifth with five runs. The Indians first two runs came on passed balls. Then, with two outs, McCook got three straight doubles to tie the game at 10-10.

McCook went up 17-10 in the sixth with some good hits including two home runs. WNCC added one in the sixth, but McCook plated three more in the seventh on a 3-run home run.

WNCC tried making a seventh-inning comeback as Austin Cooper had a one-out triple and scored on a Vaughn Wilson single. Then, with two outs, Gladysh doubled home Wilson.

WNCC out-hit McCook 17-16 in the contest as Austin Cooper missed hitting for the cycle by a single. Cooper had three runs scored and two RBIs in the contest.

Gladysh and Hart each had four hits in the contest. Gladysh had four RBIs, three runs scored to go with a double, single, and home run. Hart had two runs scored with a double.

Harbison had two hits with three RBIs while Vaughn Wilson had two hits with three runs scored.

Game two started with McCook getting a solo home run for a 1-0 lead. The Indians then scored two in the second and added two more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.

That was when the Cougars offense heated up as they scored two in the fourth as Cooper Wilson and Jude Russell each had solo home runs.

WNCC plated two more in the fifth to make it a 5-4 contest Gladysh doubled and scored after Will Harbison had a home run.

McCook added a single run in the sixth, WNCC answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Russell singled and Ty Beutner doubled with no outs. Russell scored on a ground out. That is all they could get.

WNCC had nine hits in the contest to 12 for McCook. Six of the Cougars hits went for extra bases.

Gladysh, Payton Denny, and Jude Russell all had two hits in the contest. Cooper Wilson, Russell, and Harbison all had home runs in the contest
