NORFOLK, Neb. -- Northeast Nebraska authorities say one person is in critical condition and another is in serious condition after a crash south of Norfolk on Monday.

Around 12:40 p.m., Staton County Sheriff's Office responded to and investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident.

SCSO said that the accident happened when the vehicle was eastbound on Old Hwy 8 and lost control on the gravel road, rolled, and ejected the female passenger onto the roadway.

Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger said a female passenger, from Ainsworth, was ejected onto a county road near Old Highway 8 in Stanton County.

It is unclear if the driver, from Norfolk, was ejected as well as the female.

Unger said responders intended to fly her out of the area via LifeNet helicopter. She was taken to UNMC in critical but stable condition, according to Unger.

Both of the injured parties are 16-years-old, Unger said.

According to Unger, the male driver fled the scene and was tracked down before being taken to Faith Regional for his injuries.

The male was later also taken to UNMC for treatment of his injuries.

Seatbelts were not in use, and speed was considered to be a factor in the crash, Unger said.

The driver was cited for no operators license, careless driving, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and a probation violation.

The vehicle was a total loss and the roadway was blocked for about 1 1/2 hours as the scene was investigated.
