ATKINSON, Neb. - Jack Hoffman died overnight following a battle with brain cancer, according to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atkinson.

Around Thanksgiving 2024, Jack's mom, Brianna, had shared an update that doctors had found multiple new tumors.

Over Christmas 2024, Brianna posted another update through CaringBridge saying Jack was still having symptoms. She said they were "able to celebrate Christmas together at home, so we are thankful for that."

On the week on Dec. 29, Brianna said his oncology team was advocating for him to try a new treatment.

At the end of the post, Brianna said, "As you can see, even though Jack is struggling and having to fight hard, we still have much to be thankful for. Thank you to all of you praying for Jack and our family. We are grateful."

Jack started battling pediatric brain cancer at the age of five in April 2011. In August of 2014, he found out that he had a tumor that had grown since his April 2014 scan.

He was in remission 13 months later in 2015.

Jack was born in September of 2005.

Hoffman rose to prominence in 2013 when he scored a touchdown at the Nebraska football spring game. The moment won the 2013 ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports. His friendship with star Husker running back Rex Burkhead helped draw attention to Team Jack, a nonprofit started by Hoffman's family that raises money for pediatric brain cancer research. The foundation has raised millions of dollars.

"Jack may no longer be with us in person, but his legacy lives on in the work of the Team Jack Foundation, in the lives of the children and families we've helped, and in the hope he gave to so many," the foundation said in a social media post. "While we mourn his passing, we also find comfort in knowing that Jack is now reunited with his father, Andy, in heaven. Jack Hoffman, you will always be our hero."

Hoffman was a freshman at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. He made the dean's list his first semester as a political science student.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jack’s family, friends and all those whose lives he touched," a UNK spokesman said in a statement. "Jack’s connection to the UNK community, even in his short time here, was meaningful. His impact on our campus and in the broader community will not be forgotten. We are grateful for the time he shared with us.”

Immanuel Lutheran Church - Atkinson posted to Facebook, "God has summoned our brother Jack Hoffman into eternal life in the glories of heaven. Blessed be his memory among us. Visitation for Jack will Friday, Jan. 17th, from 5-8 p.m. at the church. The funeral service will be Saturday, Jan. 18th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Atkinson Community Center. 'Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.'"
