Northeast Community College Helps Students Balance Work, School

NORFOLK, Neb. — Northeast Community College is tackling the juggling act of school, work, and life head-on! Just two weeks into the semester, the college is rolling out new initiatives aimed at helping students strike a balance between earning extra cash with part-time jobs and staying laser-focused on their studies and social lives.

With over 40 employers in attendance, Northeast has partnerships with employers locally, regionally, and nationally that can give students a wide variety to learn about certain industries and different work options to choose from such as health care, retail, and agriculture.

With the students' number one focus to be educated for higher learning, the college has picked employers that will work with all student schedules, considering some students have classes Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and some have classes Tuesday and Thursday. Many of the employers work weekends and night shifts, which helps with the students' varied schedules and later becomes a match for our students.

This also helps if the student and employer become a good match; the opportunity could lead to something far more than a part-time job and extra cash on the weekends. Northeast Community College Career Services Office Director Terri Heggemeyer said, "It may lead to an internship that's required for the student's program, or it could potentially lead to promotional opportunities for them to land that full-time job as well.”

The college is planning and will host several other job fairs that may include an agricultural career fair, a nursing and health care career fair, an electrical mechanical fair, and an electrical construction career fair, among many others. If students cannot attend each event, the school will share contact information with the students.
