Columbus names Bret Strecker as new police chief

 

COLUMBUS, Neb. — Officer Bret Strecker has been appointed as the new Police Chief of Columbus, a move celebrated by the mayor.

Strecker, a long-time resident and a 30-year veteran of the Columbus police force, steps into the role after serving as interim chief twice, first in February and again in July following the resignation of Chief Al Fear.

Strecker aims to enhance community policing, encouraging all officers to engage with the community as part of their yearly goals. "We do a lot of things already, but I want to get all of our officers involved in community policing in some fashion," Strecker stated. He expressed his enthusiasm for serving a community that supports its officers and unites in times of need.

Columbus Mayor Jim Bulkley praised Strecker's leadership during his interim periods, noting the positive impact on the police department.

"Looking at Brett's leadership during this interim position and seeing some of the excitement and the activity within the police department just in that short period of time, it made a difference. And I see that his leadership style will help that grow," Bulkley said.

Strecker's first official day as the Columbus police chief is set for Nov. 4.
